What we train for
At West Metro Fire-Rescue District, our commitment to excellence and dedication to serving our community drives us to continuously enhance our firefighting training program. The West Metro firefighting training staff is dedicated to equip our brave men and women with the skills, knowledge, and resilience necessary to confidently handle any emergency situation they may encounter. When a crisis unfolds, our community relies on our firefighters to bring calmness amidst chaos. Our training staff focuses on situational awareness, quick decision-making, skilled mastery and team building. By simulating real-life emergencies, our firefighters are experienced to make split-second judgments while operating under extreme pressure, prioritizing the safety of both lives and property.
Fire Suppression
Training for fire suppression is an intensive and immersive experience that prepares our firefighters for the unpredictable challenges they may face on the job. The training curriculum covers a wide range of crucial skills and techniques, ensuring that firefighters are equipped to handle various fire scenarios. From the classroom to the field, staff receives in-depth knowledge on fire behavior, hazardous materials, and fire apparatus operation. Through realistic simulations and practical drills, firefighters learn to enter burning structures, handle various firefighting tools, and execute life-saving rescue techniques.
Search & Rescue
Search and rescue is a crucial component of the fire service that demands rigorous training. Our training not only equips us with the necessary tools and techniques to conduct efficient and safe search operations, but it also fosters a culture of teamwork, adaptability, and effective communication. By constantly refining our expertise, we strive to reduce response times, minimize risks, and ultimately, save lives.
Medical Response
Medical response plays a crucial role in the functions of the fire service. Being the first responders on scene, firefighters are trained to provide basic life safety until paramedics arrive. Whether it’s responding to a car accident, a heart attack, or a broken leg, firefighters are equipped with the skills, tools and knowledge to administer life-saving interventions.
Vehicle Extrication
Vehicle extrication training is an essential component of a firefighter's skill set. With the increasing number of vehicles on the roads, the need for trained personnel capable of effectively and safely removing individuals from damaged vehicles has become paramount. In our training sessions, we focus on honing our techniques for safely gaining access to vehicles, stabilizing them, and efficiently removing victims using tools such as hydraulic cutters and spreaders.
Water/Ice Rescue
Water and ice rescue involves a specialized set of skills and equipment to safely rescue individuals in distress on or in bodies of water. In water and ice rescues, firefighters work in teams to coordinate rescue attempts from the shore and in the water with the victim. By donning protective suits and entering the water with rescue equipment, firefighters learn how to ensure the safety of the victim and extricate them quickly from the hazardous environment.
Technical Rescue
Technical rescues require specialized training to ensure the safety and effectiveness of emergency responders. Firefighters learn about various tools, equipment, and procedures, as well as receive hands-on training to develop the necessary skills to properly execute complex rescues utilizing knowledge of knots, harnesses, rigging hardware, and belaying techniques.
